International Conference on Circular Economy & Sustainability

“Towards World of Circular Economy for Sustainable Living “

In responding the publication of ISO 59000 Series

Background

Climate change, depletion of natural resources, environmental degradation, and the increasing volume of global waste have become major challenges for humanity in the 21st century. The traditional linear economic model—which relies on the take–make– dispose pattern—has proven to be unsustainable, placing significant pressure on ecosystems and human survival.

In response to these crises, the Circular Economy (CE) approach has emerged as a new paradigm for economic development that is not only resource-efficient but also environmentally friendly and sustainable. Circular Economy promotes closed-loop material cycles, extends product lifespans, reduces waste, and integrates the practices of reuse, reduce, and recycle into industrial strategies and public policies.

Awareness of the importance of the Circular Economy (CE) continues to grow at the global level. In response, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has officially published the ISO 59000 series—a set of international standards that provide a framework, fundamental principles, and practical guidelines for the systematic and standardized implementation of the circular economy. The ISO 59000 series includes:

  • ISO 59004: Vocabulary, principles and guidance for implementation
  • ISO 59010: Guidance on the transition of business models and values networks
  • ISO 59020: Measuring and assessing circularity performance.

The publication of these standards marks a significant milestone for various sectors— governments, industries, academia, and civil society—to adopt a more structured and impactful approach to the circular economy (CE).

As a developing country with abundant natural resources and dynamic economic growth, Indonesia is in a strategic position to lead the transformation toward a circular economy. However, this transition requires a shared understanding, multi-sector collaboration, and the adoption of international standards to ensure that the implementation of CE is not merely symbolic, but concrete and measurable.

The National Standardization Agency of Indonesia (BSN) plays a key role in introducing and mainstreaming the ISO 59000 Series into the national standardization system. BSN also serves as a bridge between international agendas and their implementation at the local and industrial levels. Meanwhile, the Ministry of National Development Planning (Bappenas) is responsible for formulating national development policies and strategies aligned with the principles of the circular economy, as well as promoting the integration of the CE concept into the country’s medium- and long- term planning documents.

Through the collaboration of BSN and Bappenas with national and international institutions, this conference is expected to strengthen the policy and institutional framework for the circular economy in Indonesia.

To accelerate the adoption and understanding of the Circular Economy and the ISO 59000 series, the International Conference on Circular Economy and Sustainability (ICCES I) will be held on November 17- 18, 2025, in Bali, Indonesia.

ICCES is the first international forum in Indonesia dedicated specifically to the theme of Circular Economy and Sustainability in the context of the ISO 59000 series. This conference coincides with the global launch of the standard and will serve as the starting point for a recurring cross-country forum that brings together:

  • Government representatives from various strategic ministries
  • ISO delegates and international organizations from Europe, Asia, Africa, Americas,Australia and pacific Oceania
  • CEOs and leaders of national industries from the energy, manufacturing, food, technology, and logistics sectors.
  • Leading academics and research institutions.
  • Civil society organizations and circular economy networks from around the world

ICCES is not only a platform for the dissemination of standards, but also a collaborative forum for knowledge sharing, partnership building, and the co-creation of collective solutions toward a circular economy that is measurable, impactful, and sustainable.

This conference is part of a strategic movement toward national economic transformation that supports the vision of Golden Indonesia 2045 and the global agenda of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
